We had a fantastic presentation at our meeting on Thursday, March 24, 2022, by Deputy Chief Matt Sutphin of the Clayton Fire Department and Emergency Management Coordinator, Amy Shearin. Deputy Chief Sutphin gave us an overview of the Fire Department, the types of calls they get, and all the tasks they must fit into their day. He explained about the various vehicles they use like their new ladder truck, engines, heavy rescue truck, reserve engine, ATVs, Trench/Collapse trailer, and rescue boat. Chief Sutphin also had with him Captain Spivey and his ladder truck crew from Station 2. After the meeting, we were invited to an up-close look at Clayton’s first ladder truck that was delivered in late 2021 and recently went into service. The ladder truck is stationed at Station 2 on HWY 42, and is a Pierce 100′ Ascendant Aerial Tower. It is the first in North Carolina with TAK-4 T3 Rear Steer Suspension. Unfortunately due to the storm rolling in with a lot of rain coming down, we didn’t get the opportunity for them to show us the ladder in action but we were excited to see the impressive and shiny new ladder truck up close nonetheless!
